THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION - OFFICERS

My journey with Malcolm X College has been a very big life changing experience. I began with Malcolm X College in 1995 taking one class at a time.
I changed my schedule to structure my life in a new direction. Getting married and having children was a big alteration in my life. Never giving up, and always thinking I would return to complete my associate’s degree. One of the great things that I can say about Malcolm X College is that the returning process has been reformed in many ways since then for the better.
I returned to Malcolm X College in 2005, motivated and ready for the long haul, even though my household was relying solely on one income. Working full time was not going to stop my progress. I never dwell on the negative, only what the positive can bring. I do understand that some students have issues with schedules and time, but I can personally say that the climb to success is not an easy one, but an achievable one. Never lose site of your own personal finish line.
Step by Step I took time to understand my teachers and their format of teaching. Although my teachers had office hours to help me, I always had tutors available to me if I didn’t understand, or needed more examples. Support is always needed to stay in the right direction of your goals, never be embarrassed about seeking help from others. That’s what makes a great team.
In 2005 I thought of some great ideas for Malcolm X College, but I didn’t know how to execute them properly. All I knew is that this school had great resources and I wanted every student in the college to have the results I did, or better. Malcolm X College offers nursing programs, mortuary programs, and PCI programs and many more. Malcolm X College is opening the door for more student involvement. We are including adult education as well. “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”. (El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz)
In 2005 I decided to ask questions and get things started by running for President of SGA. After collecting all 50 signatures and printing my flyers, I thought to myself I must have some type of vision. My vision was to become the window to the world for the students of Malcolm X College. I didn’t win that year, but that experience made my drive that much harder. Keeping in close contact with a student advisor name Mary Hernandez kept me positive and focused, and I was ready to run again for SGA of 2006.
The support of my husband and my four children let’s me know that I’m on the right track with my journey to success. Giving more than one hundred percent of my time and running on the same ticket with some students that had the same idea in mine, we successfully conquered our quest. The students of Malcolm X College have put together a super team ready to fight for their rights. Committees are forming and new organizations are popping up everywhere. This is SGA’s vision. My ultimate goal is to gain my associate’s degree in journalism and then transfer to a University where I will gain my BA in foreign language and communication. I hope to work in the U.S Embassy sometime in my future.
In closing, visions can manifest only if you activate them, an individual that is idle can’t move. Good work constitutes consistency and hard work constitutes endurance.
