Malcolm X College opens "New Student Service Center" (NSSC).
The Center is located at the east end of the 1st floor, room 1502. NSSC will provide Enrollment, Support Services and Referrals for students new to credit courses, transfer students from other college/universities, Adult Education/GED and Continuing Education students.
The New Student Service Center was developed around the Malcolm X College Mission of supporting a ".learning and assessment-centered community college, (empowering) students of diverse backgrounds and abilities to achieve academic, career, and personal success." The "admissions and registration" process is often where first generation new-to-college students form their first impressions of the college experience. However, the experience for many creates dissatisfaction, contributes to social isolation, confusion or cultural shock. Impressions and expectations formed during these initial encounters are difficult if not impossible to dispel and without intervention may further contribute to academic failure and a total disengagement from the educational process. True to the mission of the college, we must do a better job of engaging our students in activities and support services that will provide them the skills they need to overcome the educational and cultural divide they face. In order to accomplish this goal, in addition to admissions and registration processes, NSSC staff will be supporting assessment, evaluation, interventions, tutoring, supplemental instruction and referrals to and for students to avail themselves of all applicable resources at the college; through the district and the community at large. By way of these aggressive strategies students will be able to acquire the tools, skills and resources required for successful outcomes. We are excited and look forward to providing "excellent customer services" to all our clients as they strive to achieve their educational and career goals.
