Basic Nursing Assistant Program
The Malcolm X College Basic Nursing Assistant Program is an 8 week
program. Basic principles and procedures of patient care are obtained through lecture, campus laboratory, and supervised clinical experiences at a healthcare facility . The program prepares students to give personal care to patients by helping them meet basic human needs. The nurse assistant works under the supervision of a registered nurse. and or licensed practical nurse. delete
In order to graduate a student must attend all scheduled classes and
delete text clinical. You must successfully complete both classroom and clinical components of the training program by passing all clinical
procedures and final exam.
CERTIFICATION
Graduates are eligible to take the state competency exam. Upon passing
you become a state certified nursing assistant. Under current federal
legislation Illinois nursing assistant graduates must pass the state
competency exam. Payment of $50 is required to sit for this test. Our program will prepare you for this test,
The program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health for
Nurse Assistant Certificate. Graduates of the program must successfully
pass a state approved competency exam to be eligible for employment in
nursing homes and long-term care agencies and hospitals.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
As a nursing assistant you have an opportunity to work with elderly
patients in nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities.
Beginning salaries range is $7.00- $10.00 a hour.
SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general admission requirements, candidates for the
Basic Nursing Assistant Program must:
* A basic reading test is required prior to registration.
* Attain an acceptable score on the placement test for reading
(minimum score of 69). Testing hours are M-Th. 9:00am-5:00pm Fri.
9:00am-11:00am, and Sat. 9:00am-11:00am. Room 1109.Some form of
identification is required. The test is approximately 55 minutes in length and
no appointment is required. Also there is no charge for this test.
* Speak and understand English
* Attend an information session.
* Consent to a criminal background check required by the State of
Illinois. Payment of $15 is due upon registration in the form of
a money order or cashiers check payable to S.I.U.
* Complete a health examination.
* Must be 16 years of age or older.
* No GED or High School Diploma required.

CLASS SCHEDULE
* Classes usually run concurrent with the college semester schedules. Regular day and evening classes are available but days and times vary. Specific information will be provided at the information/orientation session. Once you pass the reading assessment test you will be notified of an information session. All programs are held at the main campus 1900 W. VanBuren.
