2nd Annual Male Empowerment and Leadership Conference

On February 21, 2009 Malcolm X College hosted the 2nd Annual Male Empowerment and Leadership Conference “Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn.  Over 100 men from the Chicagoland area registered and attended the conference, including students, community leaders, and organizations. This second year initiative was chaired by Arlethia Mayes Malcolm X College Advisor.  The conference affords men from all ages, backgrounds, and perspectives an opportunity to connect with the college, the community, and other organizations that can support the goal of being empowered as a leader. A panel of distinguished community leaders was available to answer questions and concerns of the participants.  The panel included:  Roland Martin, CNN Political Analyst, John Dozer, Vice Chancellor of IT and CIO, Robert Fioretti, 2nd Ward, Miguell Del Valle, City Clerk of Chicago, and Samuel Jackson, Pastor New Freedom Kingdom Covenant Church.

The Male Empowerment and Leadership Conference provided an incredible opportunity for males to get connected to valuable resources and people in order to achieve educational, personal, and professional goals.  Arrays of workshops were hosted on a variety of topics such as:  Males in Higher Education, Mentorship, College Survival, Financial Literacy, Products of the Community, and Hip-Hop Journey with the Ancestors. The issues that surfaced created strong and important dialogue that was necessary. Participants were able to get information and enroll in the Adult Education and Credit programs offered at Malcolm X College. In conclusion the conference opened doors for more student development programs and initiatives to address the current need to educate and empower the males in the community to lead.
