Associate of General Studies(0203)

The Associate in General Studies degree is neither a transfer nor career degree. It permits the individual to choose and attend classes while deciding upon future goals.

The degree also enables the student to fulfill specific course requirements of a program for provisional admission. While four-year colleges and universities may accept credits earned for this degree, no articulation agreement for guaranteed junior-level status has been established.

Emphasis in the Associate in General Studies degree program is placed upon exploration and development through the study of a variety of subject offerings. Students may be admitted to one of the other degree programs upon reaching program admissions standards. The program requires the successful completion of a total of 60 semester hours of general education and elective courses with a cumulative grade point average of “C” (2.00).

Students transferring from other colleges or universities must complete the last 15 semester hours of required course work in residence at Malcolm X College to be eligible for an Associate in General Studies degree. In addition, the School Code of Illinois requires students earn a passing grade on an examination of the Constitution of the State of Illinois, the code of the American Flag and the Declaration of Independence. This requirement can be met by proof on an official transcript or GED Score Report verifying successful completion of this examination. Political Science 201 or History 111 with a grade of “C” or higher will meet this requirement.

Curriculum

A minimum of 30 of the 60 minimum required semester hours must be distributed among the GEC areas of communication skills, consumer education, mathematics, natural and social sciences. Students are encouraged to take courses listed under the GEC of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) list in case they want to transfer to a four-year college or university.
