Mission Statement
The primary function of Security is to protect life and property against criminal attack to preserve the peace within the established limits of the college community. In addition, Security is charged with the securing of buildings and grounds, enforcement of laws; regulation and control of traffic: investigation of crimes, accidents and other disorders, maintaining records, identification and communication within the department.
It must be emphasized that the effectiveness of any Security Department is largely dependent upon the assistance of each and every member of the college community. Individuals must be made aware of the fact that they, as part of this institution, are also responsible for maintaining of law and order. They must also feel a personal involvement in the responsibility to report any minor or serious crime activity.
A vigorous surveillance is maintained by Security to prevent criminal activity on the campus on a twenty-four (24) hour basis, Seven (7) days per week. For immediate security service: Pick up one of the emergency phones located around the campus (these phones are direct connect to security) or use a regular campus phone and call (312) 850-7166, 7167, and 7168 and also for calling Chicago Police or Fire Emergency from a campus phone dial - 9911.
It is the duty of the security office to maintain a safe environment for people who are a part of the Malcolm X College experience. This process will move forward with dedication to excellence. Security must start at the point of excellence and move forward from that point.
The Director of Security approaches the selection and training of officers as a high priority. Each officer is selected to achieve positive success through education, training and a commitment to service. Each officer is a trained certified peace officer who has successfully completed training at a law enforcement academy that is state certified.

Building Hours
Monday-Saturday 7 am - 10 pm
Sunday 5 pm
Malcolm X College is open to students and staff on school days beginning at 7AM. All labs and classrooms with equipment will not be opened unless an instructor is present. The building closes at 10:00PM (except Sunday, 5:00PM). Everyone should be out of the building unless an authorized building form is on file or a function is being held that requires the building to remain open until the event is concluded.
MXC Identification Cards
MXC Photo IDs can be obtained from the Photo ID Station located outside the Security Office (Room 1208).
Students: In order to obtain an MXC ID, you will need:
- Your current semester registration schedule as issued from the Registrar’s Office.
- Another form of photo ID such as: Drivers License, State ID, Passport or Consular ID.
Faculty/staff: In order to obtain an MXC ID you will need:
- One form of identification such as: Drivers License or State Identification.
- Letter of introduction from the Human Resources Department or the Department Head of the employee's department.
Malcolm X College Identification card replacement fee: $10.00
Free Parking
Parking permits can be obtained from the Security Office (Room 1208).
In order to obtain a parking permit, faculty, staff, and students must present:
- A current semester registration .
- Valid Malcolm X College Identification.
- A valid Driver’s License (traffic tickets are allowed).
- A current vehicle registration and vehicle insurance card with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and car description listed.
Parking permits are required to park in the Jackson Street, East Dock and West Dock lots. Permits are to be clearly displayed. Violation will result in notification and then further action.
Jackson Street Lot
Yellow Lined Spots – Students Only
White Lined Spots – Faculty and Staff Only
Blue Lined Spots – Visitors Only
East and West Lots
Only Faculty and Staff may park in the East and West Lots.
Preventive Patrol
The Malcolm X College Campus is patrolled on foot and by the security vehicle. Security Officers aggressively and systematically cover their beats frequently at regular intervals to prevent criminal activity on campus. Security Officers take action on any violation they may observe, and render aid to those who need it.
Search of the Persons
Security Officers on patrol may make an arrest. After making a lawful arrest, a Security Officer may search the persons or the individual arrested for the purpose of:
- Protecting the college and any persons legally participating in any college activities.
- Preventing any illegal activities.
- Discovering any criminal activity, evidence or any item which may constitute, evidence of an offense (Illinois Compiled Statutes, Chapter 720, Section 5/108-1).
- Any activity that may cause the college to be disrupted from its normal functions.
Searches during temporary questioning may be under the provisions of Chapter 720; Section 108-1.01 for weapons where the officer has reasonable grounds to believe the officer or another is in danger of attack.
Security Cameras
Security cameras were installed at Malcolm X College to assist the Security Office. The installing of security cameras at Malcolm X College is a positive use of modern technology to assist in discovering and eliminating crime. The cameras are used as an additional patrol tool by officers to check the campus for suspicious or illegal activities. If any illegal activity is discovered through camera surveillance, Security Officers are immediately dispatched to apprehend and arrest any criminal element.
Stops and Questioning
Security Officers have the authority to stop and challenge anyone on campus for probable cause. Suspicious persons are checked out to provide a safe and tranquil environment for students and other members of the college. (Chapter 720, Section 5/107-14, Illinois Compiled Statutes).
Unauthorized Office Opening
Anyone requesting a room with equipment opened by telephone will have to be identified as an instructor or staff member of that department. The instructor or staff member must be present when the office is opened and will assume full responsibility once the office is opened.
Incident Reports will be filled out for the following incidents: Sick Persons, Injured Persons, Theft, Battery, Robbery, Assaults, Damage to Property, Traffic Accidents, Student Conduct that requires Security intervention and any incidents that requires an arrest, or as directed by the Director of Security.
All incident reports should include the “Who, What, Where, Why and When information.
Informational Reports will be filled to record any other incident such as lost keys, doors left opened, found or lost property, and any incident or problem that does not fall under the category of an Incident Report.
